OREM -- Jeremy and Sydnee Hancock are all smiles. After a whirlwind Veterans Day, they're still trying to figure out how it worked out perfectly.

"How did we get here?" Sydnee asks. "You're here. Our baby's here. But how did this all happen?"

Well, up until a few days ago, Jeremy was serving his second rotation with the Army Reserves in Afghanistan. He's part of the 405th Civil Affairs Battalion.

Originally, Jeremy wasn't scheduled to come home until Friday. Sydnee wasn't due until Dec. 11. But when Sydnee told him the baby might come before then, he hurried.

He says, "The whole flight time from Afghanistan to here is about 20 hours in the air, and the time just wouldn't go fast enough."

Then driving on I-15, she felt something. She says, "On the way home is when I was like, something's happening. For real I think what if I have this baby on the freeway? That's not the plan! This isn't the plan anyway, but traffic is definitely not the plan."

They made it to Orem Community Hospital, and a few hours later Asher Miles Hancock was born. His middle name, Miles, means soldier in Latin, and it's symbolic for the 7,000 MILES Jeremy traveled to see the delivery.

She says, "It's a special day for military families. It's quite a tight-knit community, and so Veterans Day is a big deal.

"I think it represents a lot of what our family is about," Jeremy says. "So to have him born on Veterans Day is a pretty neat connection. It's a connection that will last all of Asher Miles' life.

Jeremy will return to Afghanistan in two weeks to finish his rotation. He's scheduled to come home for good in June of next year.

i usually get a little sad when i hear of another baby named Asher. just because in my head.. my Asher Liam is the only Asher ever:) but i LOVED this.
